The MDW/MDSW Process & Product team oversees the final stages of media manufacturing processes, ensuring the smooth operation and high servo & defect / TA quality of media to meet customer requirements. Our mission involves optimizing and improving current processes to meet internal and external customer needs. We drive the successful integration and improvement of HAMR (Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording) technology to enhance our production processes.

About the role - you will:

 

As the Data Scientist – MDW Media Process & Product Staff Engineer, you will enable data-driven decision-making across the Media Process & Product organization by designing, developing, and deploying analytical models, automated data workflows, and advanced statistical solutions that improve product quality, process stability, and manufacturing efficiency, while partnering closely with cross-functional media engineering teams to turn insights and intelligent automation into measurable impact.

 

Data Science & Modeling

  • Develop and deploy machine learning and statistical models to optimize manufacturing and media processes.
  • Perform data exploration, feature engineering, model validation, and predictive analytics for yield and quality improvement.

 

Data Engineering & Pipeline Automation

  • Build automated data pipelines, dashboards, and analytical tools using Python, SQL, and enterprise data systems.
  • Handle large and complex datasets from equipment, sensors, test systems, and production workflows.

 

Cross Functional Technical Collaboration

  • Partner with Media Application, QA, Media FA, SFE, and MDW internal teams to support manufacturing metrics improvement and failure analysis (drive & MDXW).
  • Translate engineering challenges into scalable, data driven solutions.

 

Process Optimization & Continuous Improvement

  • Utilize Python and scripting tools to perform process evaluation, optimization, and continuous improvement.
  • Support defect pattern analysis, process stability monitoring, and data validation for new process introductions.

 

Communication & Reporting

  • Present insights and recommendations through clear visualizations, reports, and technical communication tailored to engineering stakeholders.

About you:

 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, or related fields.
  • Strong proficiency in Python, SQL, and core data science libraries.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Your experience includes:

 

  • Experience or exposure to machine learning and statistical modeling.
  • Experience with enterprise systems (e.g., SAP) and handling unstructured data is a plus.
