About our group:

Seagate Design Engineering group includes teams from Advanced Recording Sub-System (ARS), Electrical Integration, Servo, Mechanical, Test Process, and Firmware. ARS is a close-knit team of specialists in Head Disk Electrical (HDE), Head Disk Mechanical (HDM), and Channel Preamp. HDM, part of ARS, is a global team that applies mechanical, chemical, and data science expertise—using tools like Design of Experiments (DOE) and statistical modeling analysis—to solve complex challenges and ensure HDD reliability. 

 

Key Roles of ARS-HDM: 

  • Lead drive development across design, integration, qualification, and launch phases. 

  • Optimize recording subsystem tuning for improved head-media compatibility and robust component integration. 

  • Develop cross-functional features to enhance areal density. 

  • Conduct advanced research to increase capacity and reliability. 

About the role - you will:

As an Advanced Recording Intern to support product development which reporting to the Senior Manager of ARS-HDM in Singapore, offers the opportunity to work in a collaborative, innovative, and inclusive environment where curiosity and continuous improvement are valued. 

  • Gain foundational knowledge of HDDs, recording subsystems, and future technologies. 

  • Participate in engineering activities through on-the-job training with ARS-HDM team members. E.g. HDD bench testing and data analysis.  

  • Perform drive measurements, integration testing, and data analysis. E.g. Downloading big data and doing data mining to find root cause of failure. 

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including materials science, mechanical design, and reliability engineering. 

  • Document findings and present results in technical reports and team meetings. 

About you:

  • Adaptable in fast-paced, multi-priority environments. 

  • Detail-oriented, results-driven, and able to work independently. 

  • Effective communicator with strong interpersonal skills. 

  • Able to commit full time semester internship (May/Jul to Dec)

Your experience includes:

  • Currently pursuing in Ph.D, Master or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechatronics or related field. 

  • Basic understanding of signal processing and sensor data interpretation. 

  • Comfortable executing automated test procedures for HDD devices using scripting languages such as Python or MATLAB. 

  • Prior exposure to nanotechnology and magnetic recording systems is beneficial but not essential. 

  • Understand Design of Experiment (DOE) and basic statistical modeling.  

  • Knowledge of test equipment such as oscilloscopes and spectrum analyzers will be advantageous. 

  • Knowledge of Programming language Matlab or Python is an added advantage. 

  • Familiar with Microsoft Office (Word/PowerPoint/Excel)  

Location:

The Shugart site (named after Seagate’s founder, Al Shugart) is a research and design center. Easily accessible from the One-North MRT Station, many employees choose to take mass transportation to work.
