About our group:
Material Science Lab is part of the Research and Development facilities located in Shugart building to support all Hard Disk Drives (HDD) and some non-HDD material related selection, qualification, failure analysis, etc. The functions of the team include performing material, coating and adhesive level selection, testing and qualification for HDDs, and performing component proactive qualifications for HDD programs. In addition, the lab is involved in advanced material development / selection. The lab also has multiple cross-site &/or cross-functional collaborations on various projects and areas of work.
About the role - you will:
Responsible for the characterization and qualification of HDD components and materials, with a focus on component cleanliness & reliability performance. The role involves developing and refining test methods to address reliability issues, applying material science and engineering principles to generate effective solutions. This position requires independent problem-solving across non-routine technical challenges and rigorous data analysis. You will work with minimal day-to-day supervision and take ownership of assigned projects. This is a career-focused, journey-level role that demands a high level of independence. The role also includes the use of analytical tools such as Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) / Energy Dispersive X-ray detector (EDX), Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and other analytical techniques to assess material cleanliness and qualify components and materials for use in Seagate HDDs.

The Shugart site (named after Seagate’s founder, Al Shugart) is a research and design center.
