Job Description
Job Title:  Engineer (Mechanical Design)
Posting Start Date:  9/11/26
Job Description:

About our group:

The Sputter Equipment Development Engineering (SpEDE) team at Seagate designs and develops next generation sputter process equipment that supports global HDD media manufacturing. We operate at the intersection of mechanical design, vacuum technology, thermal engineering, automation, and process integration, transforming early stage concepts into fully validated systems deployed across Seagate factories worldwide.

As part of a global engineering organization, SpEDE partners closely with R&D, manufacturing, and process engineering teams to deliver equipment solutions that drive performance, reliability, and manufacturing efficiency at scale.

In this role, you will be embedded in a highly collaborative engineering environment that values strong fundamentals, hands on problem solving, and continuous learning. You will gain exposure across the full engineering lifecycle—from prototype builds and testing to troubleshooting and design validation—playing a key role in transitioning concepts into manufacturing ready equipment.

About the role - you will:

  • Develop, test, and document mechanical designs for transport mechanisms, vacuum systems, and process stations, including deposition chambers and substrate heating, cooling, and cleaning systems.
  • Take ownership of technical assignments involving applied research and the design, fabrication, modification, and evaluation of mechanical and electromechanical devices, components, and systems.
  • Develop initial concepts for assigned devices, components, or systems and contribute to detailed product design.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide mechanical engineering input on design for manufacturability (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), reliability, and serviceability.
  • Create, review, and release accurate 3D solid models, engineering drawings, and related design documentation.
  • Work closely with local vendors and internal stakeholders to support fabrication, resolve technical issues, and facilitate the timely delivery of parts and assemblies.
  • Support prototype builds, testing, troubleshooting, verification, validation, and the transition of designs into production.

About you:

  • Collaborates effectively in the selection of materials, interfaces, and surface finishes that are appropriate for precision engineering and clean manufacturing environments.
  • Produces clear engineering specifications, drawings, and documentation that accurately communicate design intent to internal stakeholders, cross-functional teams, and external suppliers.
  • Demonstrates the ability to understand technical requirements, identify design constraints, and translate them into practical, manufacturable engineering solutions.
  • Applies a structured and methodical approach to problem-solving, leveraging prototypes, test data, analysis, and experimentation to support evidence-based design decisions.
  • Exhibits curiosity, creativity, and a growth mindset, with a strong commitment to continuous learning, process improvement, and solving complex engineering challenges.
  • Possesses a genuine passion for engineering, a willingness to learn, and enthusiasm for contributing to the development of meaningful products that deliver value to customers and improve outcomes.

Your experience includes:

  • Bachelor’s Degree plus 3 – 5 years’ experience in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD software, with experience creating solid models and production-ready engineering drawings.
  • Familiarity with the complete engineering design process, including feasibility studies, conceptual design, detailed design, design reviews, verification, validation, and production realization.
  • Knowledge of engineering change control processes, including Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), and the release of manufacturing-quality documentation.
  • Experience designing dynamic electromechanical systems or precision mechanical equipment.
  • Experience applying DFM and DFA principles and working with vendors or fabrication partners.
  • Experience in high-vacuum system design and heat-transfer applications is an advantage.
