The Seagate Derry / Londonderry Manufacturing site has been open for 30 years this year. We have over 1200 people working in our facility which is among the most advanced in the world, in the design, development, and volume manufacturing of recording heads. These recording heads write information onto and read information from the recording disc, within the data storage device.


In the role of Laser Design Modeling Engineer, you will be working within the Laser Design Research and Development team. This team is part of the broader Recording Head Technology. Partnering with the worldwide wafer development and test / characterization teams our responsibility is to develop and the recording heads for future generations of Hard Disk drives. 

About the role - you will:

 

•    Carry out computational modelling of III V Semiconductor Lasers for use in next generation Mozaic 3+ (HAMR) read-write heads.
•    Use LaserMOD/Crosslight/Harold etc, FDTD, Lumerical Interconnect and other similar methods to simulate laser performance within the HAMR integrated photonic system.
•    Carry out data analysis to support the conclusions made from modelling and model to measure closure assessments and improvements.
•    Propose laser designs to provide improvements in robustness to optical feedback and laser reliability.
•    Work with R&D engineers and scientists to plan experimental builds and testing of the proposed designs.
•    Improving existing modelling capabilities and development of new modelling methodologies.
•    Collaborate with adjacent teams and internal customers to ensure that the proposed future designs will meet the performance and reliability requirements of the future product roadmap.
•    Keep abreast of developments in the field of III V semiconductor laser research.

About you:

 

•    Knowledgeable in the area of, III V semiconductor laser physics and laser design.
•    Knowledgeable in the area of, III V semiconductor laser design for reliable, stable performance at high temperatures and robustness to external optical feedback.
•    A good communicator with excellent presentation and written skills. 
•    A strong team player who works effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
•    Able to set own course in projects and make timely decisions. 
•    Motivated and excited by technology and the challenge of going beyond what exists today.
•    Able and willing to introduce own ideas and solutions for technology progression.

Your experience includes:

 

•    Bachelors/Masters/PhD qualification in relevant area (e.g. Lasers, Photonics, Optics, Opto-electronics, Physics) in addition to relevant industrial experience, or, Post Doctoral experience in the area of III V semiconductor laser design and modelling
•    Strong analytical skills and proven problem solving skills.

 

You might also have:


•    Additional experience in the areas of opto-electronics, photonics or integrated circuit design/modelling.
•    Industrial experience would be considered a distinct advantage 
•    Higher level academic qualifications e.g. Masters, PhD, would be considered an advantage.
