About the role - you will:
As a Metrology Magnetics Specialist, you will be responsible for supporting and developing magnetic measurement capability across both manufacturing and new product development activities. You will do
Working closely with Process Engineering, Product Engineering, Design, Manufacturing, and Research & Development teams, you will provide technical expertise in magnetic characterization and measurement methods used to evaluate recording head and media performance.
The role combines advanced metrology, statistical analysis, process support, and new technology development. You will play a key role in understanding magnetic performance, identifying opportunities for improvement, and developing new measurement techniques required for future recording technologies. You will receive extensive training in key aspects of wafer processing, including vacuum technology, photolithography, electroplating, and a wide range of metrology technologies. This will also include manufacturing systems and state-of-the-art process controls.
• Provide technical leadership in the characterization and understanding of magnetic materials, correlating material properties, process conditions and measurement data with HDD recording performance, reliability and manufacturing outcomes.
• Provide technical ownership and support for magnetic measurement systems used in HDD product development and manufacturing.
• Analyze magnetic performance data and communicate actionable insights to process, product and manufacturing teams.
• Establish and maintain global standards, best practices and documentation for magnetic measurement techniques and data analysis methodologies.
• Define measurement uncertainty, calibration methodologies and error budgets to ensure confidence in magnetic measurements while supporting product and process failure investigations through data-driven root cause analysis.
• Investigate measurement-related issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions.
• Support process development teams through data-driven analysis of magnetic performance trends and process interactions.
• Support product and process failure investigations through detailed magnetic characterization and data-driven root cause analysis.
• Develop next-generation metrology solutions to support future product and technology requirements.
• Collaborate with global R&D and engineering teams to qualify new measurement techniques and technologies.
• Ensure measurement systems meet capability requirements through statistical analysis, correlation studies and Measurement System Analysis (MSA).
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on measurement accuracy, automation, throughput and data quality.
• Partner with equipment suppliers and internal stakeholders to evaluate, qualify and deploy new tools and technologies.
• Support manufacturing operations through timely analysis and interpretation of critical magnetic performance measurements.
• Contribute to technology transfer activities between research, development and manufacturing environments.
• Evaluating new materials for enhanced process performance or cost improvement and working with vendors for new tool qualifications.
About you:
*Please note that you must be eligible to live and work in the UK without the requirement to be sponsored by Seagate. Essential • Degree (or higher) in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Magnetics, Data Science or a related scientific/engineering discipline.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Experience working with technical data analysis and statistical methods.
• Ability to communicate complex technical findings to multidisciplinary teams.
• A collaborative approach and willingness to work across multiple engineering organisations.
Your experience includes:
Desirable • Knowledge of magnetism, magnetic materials, magnetic recording technologies or spintronic devices. • Experience with magnetic characterization and measurement techniques.
• Knowledge of data analysis tools such as Python, JMP, MATLAB, R or similar.
• Experience in semiconductor, data storage, advanced manufacturing, research or development environments.
• Understanding of Design of Experiments (DOE), SPC, MSA and statistical process control methodologies.
• Experience developing automated analysis tools and data visualization solutions.
• Industrial research experience or postgraduate qualifications (MSc/PhD) would be advantageous.
