About our group:
Our atomic layer process engineering team develops advanced deposition and etch capabilities for next-generation HDD transducer technology. We work across mechanical design, materials science, chemistry, equipment engineering, and manufacturing to create robust fixtures and process solutions. This internship offers hands-on experience translating process requirements into practical mechanical designs for atomic layer deposition and etching systems.
About the role - you will:
· Work with drafters, equipment engineers, and process engineers to develop fixtures for atomic layer etching and deposition processes. · Translate process and equipment requirements into mechanical concepts, detailed designs, and engineering recommendations. · Evaluate stiffness, heat transfer, chemical compatibility, manufacturability, reliability, and process throughput. · Use CAD, engineering calculations, and finite element analysis where appropriate to compare and refine concepts. · Apply Kepner-Tregoe or similar decision-analysis methods to assess design alternatives and risks. · Present design analyses, tradeoffs, and recommendations to technical stakeholders.
About you:
· You are naturally curious and enjoy understanding how mechanical systems and physical processes work. · You are comfortable working through ambiguous requirements and creating practical solutions to open-ended engineering problems. · You combine first-principles thinking with creative problem solving and constructively challenge assumptions. · You take ownership of your work, independently drive progress, and communicate design decisions clearly. · You enjoy collaborating across mechanical engineering, process engineering, materials science, and chemistry.
Your experience includes:
· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with experience in mechanical design, structural mechanics, heat transfer, or material selection. · Ability to apply fundamental physical understanding to build and refine models, assess simulation validity, and develop mechanical designs. · Experience with CAD and exposure to finite element analysis, engineering drawings, prototyping, or design validation through coursework or projects. · Understanding of material properties, chemical compatibility, and the effects of process environments on mechanical performance. · Current bachelor’s or master’s student in mechanical engineering or a closely related engineering field. Chemical engineering and materials science candidates may also be considered with substantial coursework or project experience in mechanical design, solid mechanics, heat transfer, CAD, or finite element analysis. All candidates must be returning to classes in Fall 2027.
