Posting Date:  Dec 8, 2025
Job ID:  13325

About our group:

To address the rising global demand in data usage and storage, Seagate pushes the forefront of memory storage by engineering new technologies to achieve unparallel storage density in next-generation Hard Disk Drives (HDDs).

Our design team leads the modelling and development efforts for device performance and reliability using mechanically driven solutions at the micro- and nanoscale. We focus on invention, design, and demonstration of technologies for future data storage devices.

About the role - you will:

  • Utilize advanced modeling techniques, machine learning, design-of-experiments, and statistical analysis techniques to develop fundamental understanding of interface mechanical performance and apply that understanding to guide new design directions.
  • Work with advanced development and product development teams in the areas of mechanical design, microscale tribology, materials development and performance, surface chemistry, thin film mechanics, surface process development, and magnetic recording.
  • Develop experience in the process of taking a nanoscale design concept from modeling through wafer fabrication, test, and evaluation, to pre-production stages in a work environment that is dynamic and cross-functional.
  • Work with magnetic, plasmonic, mechanical, and optical design teams to deliver advanced Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording technologies.
  • Have a direct impact on the technology development pipeline for future data storage devices.

About you:

  • Strong computational modeling skills and experience in the areas of mechanics, heat transfer, tribology and contact mechanics, materials science, surface science or aerodynamics.
  • Have demonstrated a combination of leadership and strong teamwork skills that you will apply to initiate, execute, and collaborate on technology development projects.

Your experience includes:

  • Strong computational modeling experience that may include finite element methods (such as ANSYS or COMSOL), molecular dynamics, solid mechanics, fluid dynamics, or related areas
  • Strong academic background in mechanical engineering, materials science, applied physics, or related field
  • Micro- or Nano-scale science or technology development
  • Ability to communicate effectively across diverse engineering teams
  • A Ph.D. in an engineering or scientific discipline
