About our group:

This position will work with the Process Engineering Factory Controls team in our Bloomington, MN facility to enable new methods of automated controls on the tooling that is used to build the latest generation of recording heads that go into Seagate most advanced Hard Disc Drives (HDD).


Process engineering is responsible for controlling all tooling and processes used to fabricate Magnetic Recording Heads. We employ traditional process-control methods as well as novel Advanced Process Control (APC) algorithmic systems to analyze the health of our processes in real time and make needed adjustments automatically. We also manage automated systems to disposition recording heads for conformality to product specifications.

About the role - you will:

  • Work with a Factory Controls vacuum engineer to create a new automated process controller employing feedback and feedforward algorithms.
  • Learn Advanced Process Control (APC) principles and methods in order to optimize real-time automated corrections to properly target the process tools that build our latest generation recording heads.
  • Assist engineers in ensuring that automated corrections to vacuum processes are manufacturable (high yield) and stable.
  • Learn how statistical process control (SPC) tools and out-of-control action plans (OCAPs) assist in controlling the processes used within our manufacturing line.
  • Have the opportunity to assist engineers in developing, implementing, and optimizing vacuum processes (deposition, ion milling, reactive ion etch, annealing) used within the recording head build.

About you:

  • Have experience in Object-Oriented Programming in the Java language
  • Have experience in the structure and manipulation of XML within Java.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data and deliver your findings in a structured and coherent method to your peers and supervisors.

Your experience includes:

  • Working towards a BS degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or, working towards a BS in any Science field coupled with a minor or detailed skills in programming and returning to school in Fall 2026.

 

You may also have:

  • Experience in factory systems used to automatically control processes.
  • Experience in vacuum tooling used to deposit or remove materials from a substrate.
  • Experience in metrology equipment or techniques

Our Normandale campus spans two suburbs, Edina and Bloomington, and serves as the Recording Head development and manufacturing arm of Seagate. The estimated base wage range for this position is $24.00-29.00/hr. The individual base wage is based on work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Seagate offers comprehensive benefits to its eligible Interns, including, but not limited to, medical, dental, vision, and participation in the employee stock purchase plan.  Seagate also offers Interns 12 paid holidays and a minimum of 48 hours of paid sick leave.  The benefits for this position are based on a 24 to 40-hour-per-week schedule for a full calendar year and may differ depending on work location and tenure with the Company.
