Optical Engineering Internship - Summer 2026

About our group:
The Wafer MPI team is responsible for scaling new wafer processes and products from the late development space into full volume build. This is in support of Seagate’s HAMR recording technology. HAMR is enabled by an integrated laser that is used to energize a plasmonic near-field transducer. Our team manages wafer builds and engineering optimizations involving lasers and laser light paths, plasmonic transducers, electronic and magnetic elements, materials selections, and thermal management.
About the role - you will:
· Contribute to process optimization of laser light paths and optical systems in a thin film HAMR recording head · Record and assemble data, analyze and interpret results. · Prepare and deliver presentations explaining these results to engineers and managers. · Interact with multiple teams including our Minnesota site and our Springtown N.I. wafer build site · Complete an intern project and present in an intern project session at the close of term.
About you:
· Self-starter · Ability to be flexible in a workspace that can involve changes in assignments and priorities · Ability to build relationships and influence cross-functional teams · Strong communication and presentation skills
Your experience includes:
· Data collection and analysis · Experimental design is a plus · AI/ML experience is a plus · Some experience with characterization of lasers and/or optical systems is preferred. · Current student pursuing a BS or MS degree in Physics, Lasers / Optics, Materials Science, or a relevant Engineering degree.

The estimated base wage range for this position is $22-$36/hr. The individual base wage is based on work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

Seagate also offers Interns 12 paid holidays and a minimum of 48 hours of paid sick leave. The benefits for this position are based on a 24 to 40-hour-per-week schedule for a full calendar year and may differ depending on work location and tenure with the Company
