About our group:

Our team develops advanced mechanical positioning solutions for the Hard Disk recording heads. It is part of the advance Heads Research and Development group located Seagate’s research and development facility, located in Bloomington, MN.

About the role - you will:

  • Conceive and develop solutions to problems in structural and micro-actuators through innovation and the application of professionally accepted engineering techniques, practices, and procedures.
  • Work on a variety of engineering projects related to development of head gimbal assemblies and micro-actuator designs for future HDD products. Most projects are in the discipline of mechanical structural dynamics, however there are large overlap and interaction with other disciplines, such as control systems, tribology, statics et. al.
  • Own of design projects from conception, design, modeling, and design optimization through experimental validation. Own of technology development projects and mature technologies from concept phase through feasibility and development.
  • Work with suppliers to develop and mature design/material/process changes to meet performance requirements.
  • Deliver the tools, metrology, transfer functions and understanding to the Seagate internal customers (drive, factory, product integration teams) for integration.
  • Work cross-culturally and interface with teams at the drive design centers, factories and suppliers located all over the world.

About you:

  • Demonstrated design acumen to apply fundamentals and physics to solve technical engineering problems.
  • Experience with actuators and structural design.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in piezoelectric materials and material characterization/ testing.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead large corporate level projects involving multi-discipline, cross division and external suppliers.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills for coordination with the extended team and communicating issues and status to management.

Your experience includes:

  • Knowledge in Finite Element Modeling methods.
  • Experience in finite element modeling of mechanical dynamic systems with commercial software tools, such as Ansys, Classic, Workbench & Space claim, Hyper works, MATLAB, or similar tools.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering related field (i.e., Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Computer Engineering, Materials, Physics, or Information Technology) and 8+ years of experience or master’s degree in the same and 6+ years’ experience or PhD and 3+ years’ experience or equivalent experience and education.

 

You might also have:

  • Experience with Dynamics of mechanical systems highly advantageous.
  • Experience with emerging/adjacent technologies/fields, such as MEMS, data science/analytics, AI/ML are highly advantageous.
  • Experience in 2D and 3D CAD software such as AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
  • Experience with design for six sigma principles & techniques, and its commercial software, such as JMP and Minitab.
  • Interest in laboratory and experimental work.
