Our global team is dedicated to advancing Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) technology by analyzing recording physics, system reliability, and seamless technology integration for hard drives.

 

Within this team, our group specializes in the Mechanical and Dynamic performance of the Head Gimbal Assembly (HGA)—a critical component that ensures precise tracking and servo performance of the Read/Write Head in Hard Disk Drives (HDDs).

About the role - you will:

As a Senior Engineer, you will lead the development and implementation of innovative test methodologies to enhance the understanding of HAMR system mechanical and electrical performance and reliability.

 

In close collaboration with the design team, you will characterize the performance of next-generation Head Gimbal Assembly (HGA) designs and analyze the results to inform the evolution of the recording head subsystem.

 

This role spans multiple technical disciplines, including mechanics (resonance and modulation), materials science, electrical response to signals, servo-mechanical performance, and hard drive data recording—offering a dynamic opportunity to drive innovation in HAMR technology.

About you:

  • You are self-motivated with strong communication skills and thrive in a multidisciplinary, collaborative environment. Your insatiable curiosity and ability to adapt to a rapidly evolving industry set you apart.
  • You have hands-on experience with electrical and mechanical measurement equipment, including oscilloscopes, signal generators, LDVs, and thin-film sensors (anemometers and PZTs). You excel at building and optimizing lab setups and conducting comprehensive experiments.
  • You have a solid foundation in mechanical dynamics concepts and apply them effectively in your work.
  • You bring expertise in signal analysis techniques, such as spectral analysis, time-frequency analysis, wavelet analysis, digital signal processing, and filtering, to extract meaningful insights.
  • You possess strong programming skills in Python, C++, and MATLAB, enabling you to analyze data and develop innovative solutions.
  • Knowledge or experience with Interferometer (WLI) systems or physics is considered a plus.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or related background and 5+ years experience, or Master’s Degree and 3+ years experience, or PHD and 0+ years of experience or equivalent education and experience.

The estimated base salary range for this position is $92,310.40 - $131,994.70. The individual salary is based on work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

This is an ONSITE position at our Normandale campus that spans two suburbs, Edina and Bloomington: Twin Cities / Minneapolis area.
